A Legacy of Pride, Purpose, and Tiger Spirit
The Los Angeles Alumni Chapter of Grambling State University
The Los Angeles Alumni Chapter was born in 1965, when a passionate group of Grambling graduates gathered in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Truitt and Eleanor Wayne Lowery. United by loyalty to their alma mater and a shared commitment to student success, this group laid the foundation for what would become one of the most dedicated GSU alumni communities beyond Louisiana. Under the leadership of our first president, Mr. Hugh B. Flake, the chapter embraced its core mission: empowering future generations through scholarships.
Building on a Strong Tradition of Leadership
Over the decades, the chapter has continued to thrive thanks to the vision and dedication of its leaders. Following Mr. Flake, the chapter benefited from the guidance of: Truitt Lowery, Mary L. Gilbert Batiste, Ernest Webb, Medria Jackson Dunn, Dr. Vertie Logan Hobson, Conrad Lewis, Johnny L. Williams, Bettye Smith White, Calvin White, Hope R. Hampton-Crawford, Wilbur Washington, Johnny Williams, and our current president, Ericka Strong.
Each leader has strengthened our legacy of service, community, and excellence.
Celebrating Excellence Through Signature Events
Our chapter has a long history of hosting vibrant and memorable Scholarship Fundraisers—from elegant banquets and dinner dances to Broadway musical outings, fashion shows, breakfasts, and even Alumni Football Games between Grambling and Southern University.
We have proudly welcomed distinguished speakers such as legendary Coach Eddie Robinson, Green Bay Packer Willie Davis, renowned educator Dr. Vertie L. Hobson, and National Alumni Presidents Attorneys Joseph L. Morale, Faye Williams, and James E. Bradford.
We have also been honored by the presence of several Grambling State University Presidents, including Dr. Joseph B. Johnson, Dr. Harold Lundy, Dr. Raymond Hicks, Richard J. Gallot, and Dr. Martin Lemelle, Jr., along with National Alumni Association Litigation Attorney Dr. Thomas N. Todd and National Alumni Association President Dr. Tammy Richardson.
Transforming Lives Through Scholarships
Scholarship support has always been at the heart of our mission. Thanks to the dedication of our members and the generosity of our community, we have proudly provided financial assistance to 5–8 students every year since our founding—totaling more than $200,000 in scholarships awarded to Southern California students attending Grambling State University.
These investments open doors, fuel dreams, and ensure that the legacy of Grambling excellence continues for generations to come.
